Running Times Magazine: Magill on Masters: The Need for Speed: "As it turns out, masters athletes don’t lose top speed faster than endurance. A calculation of percent change in men’s and women’s masters world records between the 40-44 and 70-74 age groups – focusing on three distances – gives this result:
MEN
• 100 meters = 24% change
• 5,000 meters = 35% change
• Marathon = 36% change
WOMEN
• 100 meters = 33% change
• 5,000 meters = 44% change
• Marathon = 54% change"

Bada’s last wishes for Nigeria’s athletics
Bada’s last wishes for Nigeria’s athletics: "“Our athletics is down because we simply have failed to do the things we did, to produce stars in the past.
“During our days all the potentials were given all the motivation to succeed. There at the Games Village Lagos, there was all kinds of food for us to eat after training and we even took home some of the provisions after camping.
“But now there is nothing like that. Most of our athletes are hungry, they cannot afford to pay for their training, they have nothing to develop themselves to become great stars. I can only wish that we begin to look at putting in place the structures that produced great athletes for the country in the past,” Bada stated.

Training Sprinters
Training Sprinters: "Drills For Speed
Ankling Drill
Objective: To limit time spent on the ground & develop an elastic response in the ankle joint.
Beginning with a walk, with each small step taken, step no higher than the top of the opposite ankle. Emphasize the ankles remaining dorsiflexed throughout the drill. The look of the drill is that of a quick-shuffle action. As tempo increases, an elastic response in the ankle increases. Arms and legs should be active with the elbows loosely positioned at 90 degrees. In ankling, horizontal speed is insignificant. The focus is on limiting the time spent on the ground. Athletes should be instructed to listen to their steps! and try not to make a scuffing noise with their shoes.
Ankling cues: "toes up", "quick feet", "hot ground", "fast shuffle", "spring board action".

Training Sprinters: "Practice Makes Permanent
We are all familiar with the old cliché "practice makes perfect". In the science of speed development, however, it is more precise to say "practice makes permanent". This is especially true where the neuro-muscular system is concerned. Since the nervous system cannot distinguish between the results you desire and what you actually rehearse, it will simply master the movements you do most often.. So in training, whatever you do becomes permanently etched into the neuro-muscular system. Athletes must therefore avoid doing lazy drills, lackluster exercise routines, or general training that strays too far from the movements specific to their event specialty."

Onyali reveals why she quit athletics in 2004 | AthleticsAfrica.Com: "She said: "I still have it in me, as I showed yesterday at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in the Veterans race of the 21st Nigeria/NNPC/Mobil Track and Field Championships.
"I knew I could still continue when I quit the stage after the 2004 Olympics in Athens but I wanted the game to develop. I wanted the upcoming ones to grow.
"Of course, I was not moving upwards as there was no more challenge on the continent and I was not moving up the ladder on the global stage."
"I felt if I continued here, I will continue to keep the others down, especially the younger ones who always feared my name and get weakened psychologically,'' she added.
She had a personal best of 10.97secs in the 100m recorded in 1993 and won the bronze medal in the 4x100m relay at the 1992 Olympics and in the 200m at the 1996 Olympics."

The History of Veteran Athletics
The History of Veteran Athletics: "The story of Veteran Athletics began at grass roots level with middle-aged men and women striving to relive the enjoyment and good health bestowed by physical fitness. The earliest Veteran competitors were mainly road-runners, although some very long-standing records were set by sprinters, jumpers and throwers (M40 Don Finlay (GBR) hurdles 14.4 seconds in 1949; M40 Egon Nillson (SWE) high jump, 2.05 m in 1966; M55 Karl Hein (FRG) hammer 52.01 m in 1964).
To recognise the desire of burgeoning numbers of these runners to compete at their own age level, the Interessen-Gemeinschaft Älterer Langstreckenläufer (IGÄL) was formed in 1968 and held its inaugural Marathon Championships in Holland. Pioneers of IGÄL were Arthur Lainbert, Meinrad Nägele, Dr Ernst van Aaken of Germany and Jacques Serruys of Belgium."

Best WMA Male Athlete 2011: Ron Robertson (NZL)
Best WMA Male Athlete 2011: Ron Robertson (NZL): "Ron has no scientific training plan. He just gets out and runs five or six times a week for 40 to 60 minutes depending how he feels. He does do these runs at fairly high intensity, though.
He regards himself as lucky to have not had many injuries during his career, but admints that these days the "niggles" take longer to shake off. In spite of his great performances in Sacramento, Ron still believes there is room for improvement with more racing and training. Given his comfortable winning margins, this is bad news for his competitors.

Power Sprinting
Power Sprinting: "Maximum strength – Developed using heavy loads (80% 1 rep max) lifted between 1-5 repetitions with long recovery between sets.Explosive Power – Loads are lifted that allow the athlete to optimise power output (30-80% 1 rep max). Exercises using both heavy and light loading can be combined to form a ‘complex’ (e.g. heavy squat, followed immediately by explosive squat jumps).
Quickness – Plyometrics (hops, jumps, bounding) can help an athlete develop the speed of movement required during sprinting."

Practical training
Practical training: "That's certainly a great question - and one that younger runners can relate to as well. Distance runners of any age can improve their performances dramatically by upgrading running velocity at VO2max, economy, lactate threshold, flexibility, range of motion, strength, and speed. The last two factors - strength and power - are particularly important for older runners, since muscle mass and overall neuromuscular function tend to decline with age.

Veterans steal Calabar Mobil Championships show
Veterans steal Calabar Mobil Championships show: "But as the trials dragged to a close it was the veterans who provided the laughter. The recently retired, old and young former greats filed out under the heavy rain and it was quite a sight as worn out and over weight muscles flexed on the tracks.
Former male athletes like Bruce Ijirigho, Dan, Ogidi, Sunday Bada, Henry Amike, Yusfu Alli, Charlton Ehizulen, Lee Evans, Adu Uruemu, Lati Obisean, Gabriel Opuana and a long list of others took to the tracks. Some guys were just running back wards, the ground was shaking for some others. Ogidi captured the atmosphere aptly, when he said.

Master training: the importance of maintaining strength and power
Master training: the importance of maintaining strength and power: "The sprint training workouts were designed to develop acceleration and flat-out running ability. The programme was not too dissimilar from that normally followed by the master sprinters; however the volume was decreased to accommodate the strength-training elements. Slower work was done at the beginning of the 20-week programme, such as 3-5 x 200-250m runs at 75-85% maximum speed, to promote speed-endurance. However, acceleration practices from a standing start were also included – eg 4 x 30m at 80% effort. During the second and third training phases, running intensity was gradually increased until the athletes were running virtually flat out. Relevant workouts included 2-3 x 30-80m sprints at 90-98% effort and starts from blocks were also incorporated."

Italian athlete Nour Eddine CHAKOUR declared guilty of a doping offence: "The World Masters Athletics (WMA) acknowledges the information recently received from the IAAF that Mr. Nour Eddine Chakour, a master athlete from Italy, was found guilty of a doping offence. He was sanctioned by FIDAL with a two (2) years period of ineligibility (from April 20, 2010 until April 19, 2012).
The analysis of the Italian athlete's urine sample, collected on March 3, 2010 at the Italian Marathon Championship in Piacenza, revealed the presence of the prohibited substances Norandrosterone, Furosemide, Betamethasone and Dexamethasone. His results achieved at the Italian Championship will be disqualified accordingly.

Mastering Sprint Speed - Masters Athletics
Mastering Sprint Speed - Masters Athletics:Weight training is crucial for the master sprinter determined to hang unto as much zip as possible, particularly post 50,when the more significant decrease in muscle mass begin.
Training with weights around 75% of one rep maximum(1RM) will seriously offset muscle decline (and also best for releasing growth hormone.
Another crucial benefit of weight training is the role in strengthening soft tissue. This will reduce injury potential.

False start for Usain Bolt – Blake wins 100m – World Athletics Championships : Usain Bolt Fan Site: "Usain Bolt false started in the 100m race at the World Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea. Under recently changed athletic rules, an athlete is instantly disqualified if they leave the blocks before the starting gun sounds. Bolt immediately knew he had false started and took his shirt off in frustration knowing he was about to be disqualified.
Fellow Jamaican Yohan Blake went on to take the title in 9.92 seconds ahead of Walter Dix 10.08 and Kim Collins 10.09.

Speed training for veterans: how to combat the decline of speed and power
Speed training for veterans: how to combat the decline of speed and power: Drills, training methods and advice that will improve your sprinting irrespective of age:
Hill train to improve foot-strike, stride length and running technique
Two crucial factors affecting speed decline in the older sprinter are reduced stride length and an increase in the time the foot stays in contact with the ground. Hill sprints can off-set these negatives.
Here’s how: Let’s consider the action of the foot and ankle on foot strike and how this contributes to pushing the sprinter forward at maximum velocity. Running up a slight slope will emphasis a greater toe-up foot position (this is known as dorsiflexion) on foot strike.
